Diabetic Retinopathy:  Diabetes is a disease of excess blood sugar in the circulation which can cause problems in the retina (back of the eye) which can lead to decreased or permanent loss of vision.  Treatment: good control of blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol as instructed by your primary care physician.  The American Diabetic Association advocates HgA1C less than 7%. Some of the medical and minor surgical (laser) intervention to treat diabetic retinopathy can be done at our office here in Hilo!
